If this type of no-brow entertainment is your thing, you may find something to like in Angel Has Fallen but that doesn't mean you need what these guys are reselling.It might still be passable for cable, but this series has sadly fallen into unwatchable territory.It's a throwback piece of entertainment, but in the way it evaporates as soon as it ends, it's also a throwaway. By the time it's over, it's already fallen from your memory.Butler can do more, but he's so good at doing this one thing that it has become his brand. That might be a blessing or a curse, but if it's a curse, there are worse curses."Angel Has Fallen" plays out exactly as you would expect from a potboiler of this type. No surprises here, other than that it exists at all.Faults, flaws and all this supposedly final chapter in the adventures of Mike Banning got the job done as far as I was concerned.Director Ric Roman Waugh's staging of the intense scenes of conflict and action is assured and exciting.The film seems to have cobbled its set pieces together from a series of close-ups edited as if by random selection.Gerard Butler takes viewers on a thrill ride as he fights for his reputation and his life.The franchise has fallen and it can't get up."The Fugitive," to which "Angel" owes perhaps even its rooftop finale, is a template against which this movie inevitably falls short.Most action flicks would settle for thrilling violence and mayhem, in service of a utilitarian plot. "Angel" flips this formula on its head, delivering a surprisingly coherent story but with no discernible sense of fun.As staged by director Ric Roman Waugh, the film's hand-to-hand combat is so routine it's deadening - and, for that matter, so is its assault-rifle-to-assault-rifle combat.It is a doom-invoking, cathartic and strangely satisfying head-trip that's also a bit ridiculous.It brings a mediocre series to a fittingly mediocre close.Angel Has Fallen isn't high art, but it's a crowdpleaser.While Angel offers up a few potentially memorable set pieces...they all fall victim to having too much repetitive editing and not enough kinetic energy...Is "Angel Has Fallen" the kind of thing you'll remember in a year? Probably not, but it will keep you entertained for a couple of hours on an August night, and that's all it's aiming for. Mission accomplished.Operates on such a level of half-considered logic and improbable motivations that even moderately well-mounted action can't distract audiences from how dumb it is.You begin to think you're bearing witness to the reincarnation of Hal Needham. It's all utterly preposterous, and yet Waugh handles the big scenes pretty well...
