Exhausted, and exhausting."Lego 2" is like stepping on a Lego.The expression "more of the same" isn't always what artists want to hear, but for "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" it is very good news indeed.There was a super heartwarming theme to it all, one I understood and agreed with. I liked the third act and how it wrapped things up...but just because the message is good doesn't mean that it worked.The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part might not be as awesome as its forerunner but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part sets itself apart with zany touches but an acknowledgment that its audience has grown up.It deals subtly but frankly with three of the most annoyingly painful human experiences: fighting with siblings, adolescent moodiness, and stepping on LEGOs in bare feet.All in all, The LEGO Movie 2 feels like more movie than the first one, which somehow winds up making it feel like less.Viewers reared on "The Lego Movie" will find plenty to nourish them anew.A hugely ambitious sequel, joyous and genuinely complex, that's charged with dramatic and musical energy to the very last frame."Everything's Not Awesome," but just enough is to keep this series in one piece.Lord and Miller have always known what they're doing, but here it feels like they need you to know it, too.There's no thrill in retreading The Lego Movie's ground; rather, The Lego Movie 2 excels when it feels like it's juggling too many ideas at once - or building with too many bricks."The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" is at times enormously fun... But like a forced marriage between a Lego minifig and a Duplo character, its parts don't fit together seamlessly.It ends up feeling like more than an obligatory cash-in: it builds a whole new layer on top of the Lego Movie foundations.It's almost impossible to resist "The Lego Movie 2" for its continued everything-is-awesomeness, even if it does fall back on the trope of playthings terrified of being relegated to the storage bin.The Chris Pratt/Elizabeth Banks duo remains a very appealing protagonist pair, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, the sheer volume of non sequitur cameos is astonishing and the moral is another sweet one.Far from awesome, it settles for being just OK -- lacking the surprise that elevated the original, while appearing reasonably content to simply follow the instructions.While the new film is heavy-handed in its messaging about friendship and the power of getting along, it does so with little of the emotional heft of the previous installments-and about half the wit.Everything that was awesome about 2014's The Lego Movie has been taken away brick by brick for the sequel.
